Day Programs

Adult day training programs are offered at two sites in the Palatka community and are intended to support the participation of individuals in daily, meaningful and valued routines of the community. Four specialized program areas provide services based on individual goals and personal interests. Training is person-centered and developed under the direction of the recipient and is intended to foster independence and enhance the individuals’ quality of life.

Whittaker Center

The Life Skills Program at Whittaker Center specializes in serving people diagnosed with moderate to profound intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Learning opportunities are provided in the areas of communication, social skills, personal and community safety, hygiene, nutrition, exercise, awareness of personal rights and basic academics.

Support guided by Certified Behavior Analysts, are provided to help people with challenging behaviors learn new ways to communicate their needs and emotions. Many participants also require support for personal care needs. Individuals come to the service, often by public transportation, from diverse home settings including family homes, residential facilities, and independent residences. The Life Skills Program helps people gain the skills needed to be as independent as possible in their homes, communities, and future work settings.

COMING APRIL 2026: Whittaker Center Expansion

We’re growing to serve more individuals and enhance the life-changing programs offered at the Whittaker Center. Opening in April 2026, the expansion will feature new, inclusive spaces designed to promote learning, independence, and community engagement.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program

In 2009, The Arc of Putnam County implemented a unique program to provide services for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who are challenged by mental health issues. This is done through community behavioral health services offered through our Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program. The program helps those with mental illnesses address skills that are important to independent community living and to the maintenance of healthy relationships, including group therapy, paid work opportunities, medication education, symptom management, computer use, and other skills. Specialized group therapy is available for individuals with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and intellectual disabilities, usually in combination with adult day training. Mental health services are focused on helping program participants gain the skills and stability needed to work and reside independently in the community.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation is offered at both centers.

Jenkins Annex

The Jenkins Annex serves individuals whose service needs require less intensive staffing than those who attend the Whittaker Center. In an adult activity setting participants enjoy opportunities to pursue personal goals in the areas of basic adult education, computer skills, health and wellness activities utilizing modern gym equipment, community awareness and access, and social skills. Some participants have the opportunity to engage in contract work to foster employment skills and earn a little money in the process. The facility also has a strong social and leisure component including music appreciation and karaoke, fan clubs for local sports teams, lunches at area restaurants, and recreational use of technology. Participants are given primary responsibility for determining areas of interest and choosing activities.
