In 2009 The Arc of Putnam County implemented a unique program to provide services for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who are challenged by mental health issues. This is done through community behavioral health services offered at the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program. The program helps those with mental illnesses address skills that are important to independent community living and to the maintenance of healthy relationships, including group therapy, paid work opportunities, medication education, symptom management, computer use, and other skills. Specialized group therapy is available for individuals with a dual diagnosis of mental illness and intellectual disabilities, usually in combination with adult day training. Services are focused on helping program participants gain the skills and stability needed to work and reside independently in the community.
